Event Descriptions

Veg Week 2007 Kick-Off Event: "The Ethics of What We Eat: Why Our Food Choices Matter" with Jim Mason

Jim Mason

How much do we really know about the food we eat? Do we know how its production affects our planet?

Most of us go grocery-shopping but are unaware of the often unclean, unethical, and destructive food production practices that lurk behind the snazzy packaging on the foods we buy. Yet there are ways to make better, more ethical food choices, and Jim Mason’s presentation aims to show us how.

Beginning at the dinner tables of three American families, Mason takes us on an illuminating and humorous journey to uncover the origins of the food we eat, digging up secrets that food producers would rather keep buried. His investigative journalism uncovers the issues associated with buying local, organic, vegan, and fair trade, with attention to the complex dynamics of sustainability.

Jim Mason, Esq., is a writer and attorney who focuses on human and animal concerns. He is the author of several books, including two co-authored with renowned ethicist Peter Singer. His articles have appeared in such publications as The New York Times, New Scientist, and Newsday and he has appeared on CNN, CBS, NBC, and NPR. Mason has been nominated for the National Magazine Award for excellence in reporting and is the founding editor of the Animals Agenda magazine.

This is a free event, open to the public. It will be followed by a free, catered reception and a chance to interact one-on-one with Mason. All are invited to join us for this eye-opening and inspiring event.

Veg Cooking Class

Want to learn how to make delicious and simple vegan food? Come watch skilled chef, Sarah Mobry, demonstrate how to make mouth watering vegetarian specialties. All the food will be vegan, easy to make, free, and, most importantly, absolutely delicious!

We will also have Suzanne Sorenson, R.D., on hand to share tips and talk about the basics of healthy vegetarian and vegan eating.

If you like food, this is an event not to be missed! Please RSVP with Danielle at then0014@umn.edu.

spring potluck

Veg Potluck

What better way to celebrate Veg Week and try some great veg food than with a vegetarian potluck? While some food will be provided, everyone is encouraged to bring a vegetarian or vegan dish to share that serves around eight people. Also, it is encouraged, but not necessary, to bring your own plate and silverware. This is a great opportunity to sample dozens of delicious foods, meet cool people from the community, and have fun. We'll even be raffling off prizes to those who take the Pledge to be Veg!

Film Screening: The Emotional World of Farm Animals

As part of Veg Week, we will be showing the delightful documentary The Emotional World of Farm Animals, followed by free snacks and a question and answer session.

In the documentary, narrator Jefferey Masson, leads viewers through the personal journey he underwent while writing for a forthcoming book. This journey into the sentient, emotional lives of farm animals brings Masson to animal sanctuaries around the country where caregivers and the animals themselves tell their harrowing stories of rescue and escape. Masson delves into the rich ancestry of these curious and intelligent animals and interviews top experts in animal behavior who offer scientific perspectives on these amazing creatures.

Tour of a Local Chicken Sanctuary

CAAChickenRun023.jpg

Join Veg Week participants for a special guided tour of Chicken Run Rescue. Chicken Run provides domestic fowl--mainly chickens--with temporary shelter and vet care, and locates and screens adopters in the Twin Cities metropolitan area. These birds are victims of neglect, abuse and abandonment, sometimes used as a source of eggs or intended for slaughter, fighting or ritual sacrifice. Chicken Run is the only urban chicken rescue of its kind! You must RSVP to attend this event

Dine-Outs

Join us for a special Veg Week dine-out at Evergreen Chinese Restaurant! Evergreen is among the best of Twin Cities vegan cuisine and a great place to try if you are taking our Pledge to be Veg. They have a very large selection of vegetarian items on the menu including mock chicken, pork, beef, tofu, and many vegetable dishes as well. So don’t miss this perfect opportunity to take a break, enjoy extremely delicious food, and hang out with other pledgers!

Celebrate the end of Veg Week at a special dine-out and party at Red Sea Bar & Restaurant. Red Sea is a great place to get delicious animal-free, Ethiopian food and celebrate with some drinks of all sorts. Besides their fine imported beers, Red Sea offers a wide variety of lentil, bean, and other vegetable dishes served on the traditional injera bread. Don't miss this last event for Veg Week!
